The largest Portuguese Hotel Group has acquired its first property in Spain, further endorsing its Internationalisation strategy across major European cities.


Pestana Hotels & Resorts enters another major European city with the recent acquisition of a new hotel in Barcelona, Pestana Arena Barcelona. The acquisition, made official on the 01st October, represents an investment of 15 Million Euros and is part of the Group’s internationalisation strategy focusing on major European destinations.

The new four star Hotel offers 84 rooms, several meeting rooms, gym, restaurants and bars and is perfectly located for both business and leisure travellers alike, only a few meters from Plaza de España, alongside the Parque Miró and the famous Arena shopping centre. The hotel is within easy access to Sants train station, offering a fast connection to Madrid on the TGV. Also located nearby are the Barcelona Congress Centre (Fira), the Catalan Art Museum, the Olympic Village and the Montjuic Hill.

Spain represents the 15th destination to be included in the Group’s portfolio supporting the ongoing global brand growth strategy. Despite economic downturn pressures around the world, the Pestana brand is rapidly extending into major global cities as well as holiday destinations. Following the opening of their flagship property in London in March 2010, the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & Spa, Berlin saw the opening of its first Pestana property in 2011, and properties in Bogota and Buenos Aires followed shortly thereafter. In 2013 Pestana celebrated the opening of Casablanca, Morocco, Miami, USA and most recently Cayo Coco, Cuba. Pestana’s future goals include important strategic European destinations such as Brussels, Madrid, Amsterdam as well as further expansion in the UK. In South America Pestana expects to increase its current 11 hotels into new areas such as Chile, Ecuador and Peru.

In Barcelona, the Group has plans to not only maximise business from the city’s largest in-bound markets (France, United States, Italy, United Kingdom and Germany), but to also develop a large slice of the Portuguese and Brazilian markets, where Pestana has a strong presence and market awareness. Pestana Hotels & Resorts identified the destination strength of Barcelona, which currently ranks as one of the leading congress choices in Europe and the 3rd cruise destination in the world. The city welcomes 6.6 million visitors every year and ranks 6th place in top European destinations in terms of visitors.
