The hotels Pestana Carlton Madeira, Pestana Village and Pestana Miramar located in Madeira have been awarded the Tui Environmental Champion Award 2007, by the German tour operator TUI. The three units of Pestana Hotels & Resorts stood out in the environmental evaluation performed over more than two hundred hotels all over the world, for its Nature and Surroundings conservation/preservation measures.
From the several measures adopted by the Pestana Group units, stands out the resource to alternative energies, protected and endangered endemic species preservation and the incentive to costumers and staff for good environmental and resources protection practices.
According to Luigi Valle, Pestana Group Administrator, "this prize represents not only an incentive to the work developed by these hotel units in favor of the Environment, but also strengthens the Group's conscience in what is our path to environmental responsibility".
Luigi still refers that "this distinction already awarded in 2004, 2005 and 2006 to Pestana Village and Pestana Miramar and that now also contemplates the Pestana Carlton Madeira, is above all due to the commitment and conscientiousness of the board and staff of the awarded units".
The measures in detail:
Preservation of Nature, respect for the surrounding environment and awareness campaigns directed to the staff and costumers, are the premises in the base of the Pestana Group's Environmental Policy.
Periodically, the Pestana Group promotes training sessions for the staff with the purpose of implementing and developing an active environmental awareness with results on the work and production in the several group units.
The measures that compose the plan of environmental protection followed by the hotels go through the waste recycling and toxic waste collection, saving energy and resources such as water as well as for the internal awareness in respect to the environmental concerns.
Knowing that the cooperation of everyone is essential, the good environmental practices extend to its costumers, associating and turning them into an integrated and active part of the preservation measures implemented by each hotel unit.
To stand out the fact that the environmental concern has been a constant in the Pestana Group, which since 1992 has two wind energy fields working - Paúl da Serra and Caniçal - fields that produce nearly 5.8 million kwh of electric energy, 60% of the annual consumption of the Pestana Group Hotels located in Madeira Island.
