If you are planning a trip to Tangier, include the Pestana Tangier hotel in your plans and make it a starting point for your visits to the city. Morocco’s second most important industrial centre after Casablanca, tourism is one of Tangier’s most important sectors for its economy.

Tangier boasts a rich history and is home to a wide variety of influences thanks to the presence of numerous civilizations and cultures over the centuries. The city retains many well-preserved traces of Portuguese occupation, including the old fortress, churches and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Conception. There are also Spanish influences, such as the arena situated on "Plaza de Toros" and the "Cervantes" theatre. Other unmissable points of interest include the Grand Mosque, "Cabo Spartel" Beach, the legendary Caves of Hércules and the gardens of La "Mendoubia.

Take a stroll through "Tangier la Blanche", along the streets lined with whitewashed houses, stroll along the alleys of "Le Grand Socco" or "Souk Bara", up to the foot of the high walls of the "Kasbah", admire the fortress that dominates the medina and, further ahead, the "Sultan’s Palace". Let yourself be enchanted by the dream-like spirit that emanates from the city and come to understand why Matisse and Delacroix have made it the muse for some of their finest works of art.

To Visit

Souks – Buy your travel souvenirs at the large or small Souk markets, where you will find genuine handicrafts, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables. Stop by the famous Hafa Coffee for mint tea and desserts.

Tangier City Mall – 100 metres from the Hotel, you’ll find a shopping centre selling international brands, spread over an area of approximately 30,000 m2, as well as cinemas and a car park.

Beaches – Bathed by both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, the Tangier region has sweeping white sandy beaches with warm, crystal-clear waters. Achakar and Plxaya Blanca are just two popular beaches.

Promenade – A stroll along the seafront provides a unique view of the city, with its cafés, restaurants and nightclubs, beaches and port. It is almost always possible to view the Straits of Gibraltar .

Tetouan – Visit the Tetouan Medina, a World Heritage Site, just 1 hour from Tangier. The Arabic and Andalusian architecture, the historic Jewish quarter and the traditional tiles are all points of interest.

The Caves of Hercules – The legend tells the story of Greek hero Hercules who rested in these caves and separated Europe from Africa with a blow of his sword, thus creating the Straits of Gibraltar. Another myth tells of a secret tunnel between Morocco and Spain.

Kasbah – This palace was formerly the residence of sultans and Portuguese governors. Nowadays, it is a museum with an ethnographic collection from Northern Morocco. The architecture here features elaborate works of wood and marble.

With its ebullient mix of flavours, Tangier offers dishes to suit every palate. From French to Arabic cuisine, don’t forget to try some of these Moroccan specialities.
Harira – Lamb soup with beans and herbs.
Lamb – Cooked over a strong heat, stewed or roasted with dates, or in soup, this is Morocco’s favourite meat.
Pastilla – Ceremonial dish consisting of pigeon meat with almonds and pigeon eggs, all wrapped in dough and roasted. It is then dusted with sugar.
Tagine – meat or vegetable stew cooked in a special pan.
Krsa – bread served with salt and cumin.
