When to Visit Central Portugal - Snow in Serra da Estrela and Beaches in Summer
You can visit Central Portugal at any time of the year. In spring, the temperatures are pleasant and the countryside comes to life with blossoming trees, particularly the cherry trees in Fundão. In autumn, the leaves of the trees and vines tinge the landscape with shades of red and gold. These are the best seasons for hiking and outdoor activities.
If you like hot weather, summer is the perfect time to enjoy the beaches along the coast and the banks of numerous rivers. In winter, the colder weather is an invitation to savour hearty meals and experience the magic of the snow on the Serra da Estrela mountains.
How to Get to Central Portugal - Lisbon or Porto in Under 2 Hours
This is an extensive region which can be accessed using various means of transport. Most airlines fly to Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon and Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto. You can choose one of these airports depending on whether your destination is further north or further south. If you are in mainland Portugal, the train and bus are good options. If you prefer to travel by car to ensure greater flexibility and get around with no restrictions, the central region has a good road network.

Central Portugal is located between the Lisbon region (to the south) and the North, from the Atlantic coast to the border with Spain. One of the region’s great symbols is the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal (1,993 metres at Torre), sought after not only for its snow in winter, but also as a year-round destination for mountain and nature experiences, with hiking trails, lagoons and unique landscapes, as well as the famous Serra da Estrela PDO cheese. It includes Coimbra, home to the University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the historic Joanina Library, as well as Aveiro, known as the “Venice of Portugal” for its canals and moliceiro boats. Other highlights include Viseu, for its historic centre and connection to the Dão wine region, the Monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and surf beaches such as Nazaré, Peniche and Figueira da Foz.

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the best times for the cities (Coimbra, Aveiro, Viseu) and the interior, with mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and lush green landscapes. Summer is hot and dry, making it ideal for the coastal beaches, such as Figueira da Foz, Nazaré and Peniche, and for trips on the Aveiro Lagoon, although the historic cities tend to be busier. Winter is especially popular in Serra da Estrela, home to Portugal’s only ski resort, and is the ideal season to enjoy the snow and mountain accommodation such as Pousada Serra da Estrela.
The most practical access is by car: from Lisbon (Humberto Delgado Airport, LIS) you can reach Coimbra in about 2 hours via the A1; from Porto (Sá Carneiro Airport, OPO) in about 1-2 hours via the A1/A25, these being the two closest international airports. There is a good rail network: the Northern line connects Lisbon and Porto to Coimbra and Aveiro (with Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains), and there are connections to Viseu and Covilhã (Beira Baixa line). For the mountains and the interior (Serra da Estrela, Belmonte, Ourém), the car is the most flexible option.
The University of Coimbra (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Baroque Joanine Library, the Old Cathedral and the historic houses; the canals and moliceiros (traditional boats) of the Aveiro Lagoon and the nearby Costa Nova beach (striped houses); the Monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça (UNESCO World Heritage Sites), the Convent of Christ in Tomar and the Sanctuary of Fátima; and the Serra da Estrela, with Torre, glacial lagoons, hiking trails and snow in winter, while also being an excellent destination for nature and mountain activities in summer. Other places of interest include the walled town of Óbidos, the Paiva Walkways, Viseu, and the schist villages of the Serra da Lousã, such as Piódão.
The car is the most practical and flexible option, especially for the Serra da Estrela mountain range, the inland villages, the monasteries, and the beaches, thanks to good highways (A1, A25, A23). Between the main cities there are trains: the Northern line connects Coimbra and Aveiro quickly and frequently (about 30-40 minutes between the two), with Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, and Urban trains. Coimbra and Aveiro are easily explored on foot, and Aveiro stands out for its moliceiro boat trips and cycling. For rural and mountainous areas, public transport is more limited
