Where to stay in Argentina
The Pestana Buenos Aires is located in Microcentro, next to Avenida 9 de Julio, in the heart of the city, near the Teatro Colón, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the El Ateneo bookstore and the Galerías Pacífico shopping mall, and about a 20-minute walk from the Recoleta Cemetery. There is a metro station about 600 meters away.
No. Portuguese citizens do not need a visa for tourism and can stay for up to 90 days (extendable). A valid passport is required (the Citizen Card is not accepted). Since 2025, adequate medical insurance coverage and proof of sufficient funds are also required. Always confirm the updated requirements before traveling.
The local currency is the Argentine peso (ARS). Paying with an international credit/debit card is advantageous (an exchange rate close to the parallel rate applies, and foreign tourists are usually exempt from VAT on accommodation paid for with a foreign card). It's also worth bringing some US dollars in $100 bills in good condition; avoid exchanging large amounts at the airport.
There are no direct flights from Lisbon to Buenos Aires; you travel with a layover (e.g., Madrid, Barcelona, or São Paulo), averaging about 15 to 16 hours in total, with airlines such as Iberia, Air Europa, and LATAM. Buenos Aires is about 4 hours behind Portugal.
Given the distances, flying is the most practical option: to Iguazu Falls (Puerto Iguazú) about a 2-hour flight; to Mendoza (Malbec region) about 1 hour and 55 minutes; and to El Calafate, gateway to Patagonia (Perito Moreno), about 3 hours and 15 minutes. Using the Pestana Buenos Aires as a base allows you to combine the city with these trips.
The austral summer (December to February) is the best time for Patagonia, with milder weather, long days and open trails, although the weather is always unpredictable and windy (the favorable window is from November to March). For Mendoza, February to April coincides with the grape harvest, ideal for wine tasting.
