Alvor is an old fishing village in the municipality of Portimão, in the western Algarve, near the mouth of the Ria de Alvor. It maintains its genuine character, with cobbled streets, a fishing port, and seafood cuisine. It is known for the Ria de Alvor (a protected wetland, Ramsar Site) with its salt marshes and dozens of bird species; the Alvor Boardwalks (the longest in the Algarve, approximately 6 km); and Praia dos Três Irmãos (Three Brothers Beach), with its golden cliffs and natural arches. Within the village, the best way to get around is on foot, with short distances between the port, the squares, and the restaurants. For the nearby beaches, the boardwalks, the golf courses, or Portimão (less than 15 minutes away), a car or taxi is recommended; most Pestana hotels are close to the beach, allowing you to combine walking with short car trips.
